Marc Jacobs Remedy Concealer Pen; Review & Swatches of Shades

Marc Jacobs Remedy Concealer
Price: $39 for .08 ounce
(about $20/ml/gram)

CRUELTY FREE!!!

The Remedy Concealer Pen claims to be one of Marc Jacobs' personal favorite products. It features a patented palladium applicator to help ease signs of puffiness & cool skin on contact. Remedy Concealer also claims to possess everything you need to "fix the sins of a carefree youth."

The Applicator:
The purpose of a metal tipped pen, is to "soothe" and "gently massage" the under eye area as you apply concealer. "Rollerball" type concealers are becoming increasingly popular and sales are skyrocketing as consumers eagerly hope that the special tip will help reduce dark circles.

Unfortunately, the applicator won't do much good for you there. Dark circles that are hereditary and are caused by the fat pads under the eyes can't be fixed or cured by any topical product. (In fact, there's some thought that if you press the applicator too hard under your eyes, you can actually shift the fat pad over time which will make the under-eye bag worse.)

What roller-ball-type metal tips will help with, is if you have temporary puffiness. Temporary puffiness is easily identified by the fact that it's temporary- you have good days and bad days but there is some level of fluctuation in your dark circles and/or bags. (Crying, late nights, dry air, and allergies are all common causes of temporary puffiness.)

There is some suggestion, that massaging the puffy areas will help to gently push away the excess fluid that is causing your under-eye woes, and that's where formulas like the Remedy Concealer can help. (Plus, it provides coverage to conceal darkness.)

The Remedy Concealer isn't unique in that it's dispensed from a pen-tip applicator. It is unique in that it's metal tip is formulated from palladium; a feature which is exclusive to Marc Jacobs products (on account of the patent.) There's not much research to back up the claim that palladium is any more effective at "massaging" than any other metal, but there's nothing that says it will be any worse either.

Formula & Performance:
The formula for the Remedy Concealer is actually pretty impressive. It's lightweight, silky and will provide medium buildable coverage. It's exceptionally blendable, glorious to use, and can be worn under or over your foundation (which will probably depend on the shade you choose.)

There are 7 shades to choose from which will match fair to deeper tan skintones. In addition to the 7 skintone matching shades, there are two corrector shades which are a soft peachy pink and a soft yellow that will work well on those with fairly light to medium skin.

The shade selection is actually quite impressive for a concealer. I love the fact that Marc Jacobs opted for "brightening" concealer shades instead of the all too common "beigey gray" shades we see in concealer ranges.

The correcting shades are actually a great Cruelty Free dupe for Mac Prep + Prime Highlighting Pen or YSL Touche Eclat and will work well if you're looking for that type of formula (which is a water-soluble silicone corrector) instead of an emollient corrector (like Bobbi Brown's Corrector).

The finish of the Remedy Concealer is a soft satin that's totally natural looking and will be. It can easily be used as a highlighter and will deliver a much more sophisticated result than other highlighting options that are loaded with shimmer, glitter and hardly look natural or elegant.

The only downside of the Remedy Concealer is the price. It is a bit expensive for the amount of product you get and I think a big portion of that price is due to the applicator which is a tad gimmicky. I really believe that if Marc Jacobs had chosen to put Remedy in a different applicator and given a tad more product, that this would quickly become a customer favorite.

It's a shame too because all of Marc's other complexion makeup like his Transformative Mousse Foundation & Full Cover Re(Marc)able Concealer (while expensive) give you almost double the quantity of industry standards for their respective categories.

If your looking for a medium coverage concealer with a natural finish, then Marc Jacobs Remedy Concealer may be for you. If you're looking for a full coverage concealer, you might want to look at Marc Jacobs Re(Marc)able Concealer which is a fabulous Cruelty Free option in lieu of Bobbi Brown's Corrector & Creamy Concealer.

  1. Love your review! Yes, it's true, really really bad eye bags that don't go away no matter what are typically gene related! I would prefer if the applicator wasn't what it was, I tend to like a straight up liquid or cream concealer with a brush or roller ball or funny applicator!

    1. Agreed. Rollerballs are good as long as the formula's thin enough!

Speaking of eye bags, did you see Wayne Goss's eye surgery ? I'm readinng through all the comments and I'm amazed at how many people are physically ANGRY with him- it's crazy!
