Marc Jacobs Marvelous Mousse Foundation; Review & Swatches of Shades

Marc Jacobs Beauty - Marvelous Mousse Transformative Oil–Free Foundation
Marc Jacobs Marvelous Mousse Transformative Cream to Powder Foundation
New for Fall 2013
Price: $55 for....17.64 grams!!!
($3.11 per gram- standard for cream-powder formulas)

CRUELTY FREE!!!

Marc Jacobs has launched quite a few complexion products this past year, but how does his Transformative Marvelous Mousse Foundation stack up to the competition?
First things first- I want to address the price.
I know that $55 is a bit steep for the majority of us to spend on a foundation, but please keep in mind that the price is actually pretty reasonable and the cost per gram is no more than you would spend at Mac for Studio Tech or any of their other cream foundations which cost $3-4/gram ($27-$34 for 8-10 grams.) Bobbi Brown's Skin Foundation Stick is even more offensive at $6 a gram, so when you consider that Marc Jacobs is only charging $3 a gram, the price is right on par with the competition, (even if it does stink to have to spend more money upfront.)

I have to be honest, I love Mac Studio Tech Foundation. I just do. I also love Mac's new Pro Longwear Compact Foundation, but shockingly I love Marc Jacobs Marvelous Mousse Transformative Foundation more than either of them.

Marvelous Mousse Transformative Foundation is a thick, yet surprisingly lightweight, true mousse texture. It applies easily and blends beautifully giving extremely natural looking full coverage (if there ever was such a thing). Initial texture is comparable to Pro Longwear Compact Foundation while Marc Jacobs Marvelous Mousse provides just as much, if not more coverage than Studio Tech.

The finish of Marvelous Mousse is similar to most liquid/cream/mousse long-wearing/oil free foundations- matte. Strong matte. Meaning it works wonders for those with oily skin, and is safe to use on blemishes since it doesn't have any of the waxes found in similar, emollient formulas.

If you have normal-dry skin and find that after a few hours the finish looks "patchy", it's quite easy to touch up with any moisturizing cream or liquid foundation to look good as new, but if you only have signs of wear around your eyes, just add some of Marc Jacobs Re(Marc)able Full Coverage Concealer which works absolutely splendidly with the Transformative Mousse Foundation!

The 12 shades provide an excellent array of shades and even the fairest of the fair or the deepest of the deep should be able to use the lightest and darkest shades without an issue, and although Beige Medium and Fawn are both a bit on the pink side, the remaining shades are quite neutral. I personally still can't decide between Ivory & Light Ivory, but I can wear either without issue and that says more about my indecisiveness than anything. My point is only that the first two shades are indeed fair enough for most!

***The one negative about Marvelous Mousse Transformative Foundation, is that for some reason Marc Jacobs included a trivial amount of potentially irritating ingredients, but the team at Paula's Choice determined that they aren't in large enough quantities to be of concern.***

  1. This foundation is incredibly beautiful and was a surprise hit for me. How they pull off such natural looking full coverage is beyond me. The formula just melts into your skin. Unfortunately the shade range is extremely limited and the price is off-putting for a lot of folks, but I think it's worth a try. One complaint I often hear about it is it doesn't wear for a full day. It also doesn't seem to stay matte on oily skin. Nevertheless it is my go to foundation for shorter work days when I want to look flawless.

    1. I agree with you 100%. I was totally shocked by how much I liked it, its sooo much less effort to apply than Mac Studio Tech and it does provide just as full coverage but it seems to do it in a thinner layer of product which is probably why the longevity isn't there for some people. (I find it lasts as long as most non-longwearing foundations but I'm always touching up and re-setting or re-hydrating which is more than most people want to deal with.)

  2. How do you think the shades on this version compares to the gnius gel one, in your experience the 14 shades on both versions are the same in deepness and undertone? Thks
