New Formula Spring 2014
Price: $35 for 1 oz.
Shiseido is definitely a sunscreen conscience cosmetic company, probably because of their Japanese origins, but a very nice attribute for people of all skintones and ethnicity.
Because I'm not a skincare expert, I can't determine if a product contains potentially harmful irritants or will agetate sensitive skin, or actually has sufficient UVA/UVB protection. For that sort of information, I rely heavily on Paula Begoun's team over at Paula's Choice & their Beautypedia reviews. Now, the review for Shiseido SPF 42 Sun Protection Liquid Foundation PA+++ has always been rated a BEST. I just checked on the review and they have updated the ingredients to reflect the new UV Protective Liquid Foundation SPF 42 PA+++, however they have not changed the name of the product. This could be an error, or because the formula's are more similar than I realize and they are simply considering it a reformulated update. The shade range does vary, ever so slightly, in that instead of ranging from SP10-70, they are ranging from SP01-07 which makes a little more sense numerically, but they still have the same sequence which are undertone dependant as oppossed to intensity.
I use SP30, which is now SP03-Light Ochre. It is the shade which is the lightest one with yellow undertones, and the only shade from the Ochre shade lineup usually found in Shiseido foundations. It's probably about an NC15-NC20.
Shiseido seems to be shipping out the two formula's interchangeably, so if you're a lover of the Shiseido Sun Protection Liquid Foundation SPF 42, you're likely to love Shiseido UV Protective Liquid Foundation SPF 42 just as much. I won't promise regular users won't notice any difference, but I'm pretty sure it will be minimal. The primary differences seem to be in the blend of silicones they've used. Isodecane (what makes it transfer proof) is in more or less the same place so performance wise any difference should be minimal.
Here is the shade list,
Old Sun Protection Formula=New UV Protective Formula
- SP10=SP01 Light Beige
- SP20=SP02 Light Ivory
- SP30=SP03 Light Ochre
- SP40=SP04 Medium Beige
- SP50=SP05 Medium Ivory
- SP60=SP06 Dark Beige
- SP70=SP07 Dark Ivory
If you haven't tried either version of these foundations, they are a great option for the summer. Many summer foundations assume that people will be tan and they offer a lighter feel with less coverage. Many other transfer & water resistant formulas get too much of that cracking in their finish, unless of course you have oily skin. Shiseido's formula's feel pretty lightweight (although you can't skimp on it if you want the SPF 42), and offer decent coverage. It is a true transfer proof & water resistant* formula as well which makes it perfect for the beach goers who want to avoid skin cancer!
*Remember: Anytime you see a "Water Resistant or Water Proof label, that the product is claiming to be WATER proof. This means that you can go swimming and the pool or ocean itself won't remove your makeup. It does NOT mean that you can go swimming and rub your face since NO skin product is fully impenetrable to vigorous rubbing, and is also does not mean that the product is SWEAT proof. Keep in mind, that this is an oil soluble product, not a water soluble one and sweat is nothing more than oil, meaning an excess amount WILL remove your makeup. (Occasionally you'll see a sports sunscreen which claims to be sweat resistant, and you may need to look at those. This foundation will provide some level of sweat resistance, but its not advertised as such so keep your expectations realistic before you start toweling off your face in a sweat lodge!!!)
I don't love the fact that it's tested on animals, but other than that, this is a pretty great product for those looking for a one-step foundation and sun protection product. The shade range is decent, but they need some Porcelain & Fair shades, and more than one deep shade! Other than that, no matter which formula you end up with, you'll be happy!

Thank you Ami, I'm glad I could help someone!
DeleteThat's a wee bit of a problem I'll have to figure out....I just assumed nobody wanted to follow me, I had no idea they couldn't! I will have to look into this tonight and once I figure it out I will definitely follow you & let you know! Thank you SOOOO much for bringing it to my attention!
Thank you!!! I actually think the light ochre matches my skin even better than the SP30, if you can believe that. It is the ONLY reformulated foundation I have ever liked as well or better than it's original.
ReplyDeleteThat's great! Hopefully Shiseido was actually thinking of their consumers instead of a way to increase profits with their new formula!
