Makeup Forever Mat Velvet Foundation; Review & Swatches of Shades

(M.U.F.E) Makeup Forever Mat Velvet Foundation +
Price: $36 per ounce

Makeup Forever is undoubtedly best known for the amazing HD Invisible Cover Foundation and Full Cover Camouflage Concealer but the M.U.F.E. Mat Velvet Foundation + still touts some very big claims and promises to deliver a velvety soft matte finish that will last all day, absorb oil, fully conceal blemishes, and be appropriate for sensitive skin.

Makeup Forever Mat Velvet manages to achieve most of these claims but slightly missed the mark on one!
M.U.F.E. Mat Velvet is an interesting foundation when you look at it from a categorical perspective; not quite a liquid to powder formula, not quite a traditional long/wearing foundation, and more than an oil-free matte foundation, Mat Velvet certainly earns the + portion of it's name which sums it up pretty well.

Mat Velvet Foundation + is dispensed from a a dropper bottle and must be shaken well before each use. You must also take care to tap the bottom of the bottle a few times so that the top doesn't get an air bubble and explode when you open it.

You can apply Mat Velvet using almost any application method and you'll get decent results. Unlike a long-wearing formula which mandates quick blending, Mat Velvet gives you a bit more time to blend ; and while this may impact the tendency for the foundation to transfer, it has minimal impact on wear time- especially if you set it with powder.

(Makeup Forever suggests mixing Mat Velvet with All Mat if you have very oily skin so keep in mind that while Mat Velvet is definitely a matte foundation good for oily skin, it is not the ultimate authority on oil-control.)

Makeup Forever claims that a "light application will deliver a matte, natural finish" while "several layers will conceal blemishes with a velvety finish" and for the most part that's true, just like it is is with Nars Sheer Matte Foundation which is an incredibly similar formula, especially considering the two companies are unaffiliated.

Out of all of M.U.F.E's claims, the one that holds the least merit is certainly the claim that Mat Velvet Foundation is suitable for sensitive skin. True, it won't clog pores, but those who are sensitive and prone to irritation should certainly consider Mat Velvet Foundation with caution because of the added fragrance. The smell of Mat Velvet isn't over-powering, and it isn't unpleasant, but there is certainly a floral perfume that is undeniable.

It's incredible disappointing that Makeup Forever would include an added fragrance because they didn't with their HD Invisible Cover Foundation and use of fragrant products has been proven to upset skin and cause inflammation beneath the surface that is often 100%  undetectable to the skin's owner!

Swatches of Shades
15, 20, 25, 30, 35, 40, 45, 51, 53,
57,60, 67, 70, 75, 77, 80,

The shade range of Makeup Forever Mat Velvet + Foundation is impressive and consists of 21 decent shades that will suit the lightest porcelain to deep skintones.

The only issue with the shades, if that while #15 Alabaster is indeed alabaster, the next shade in the lineup #20 Ivory jumps to a light shade meaning everyone with fair skin who falls between the two shades will be forced to mix them together.

(For reference,, #15 Alabaster is lighter than #110, #115, in M.U.F.E HD Invisible Cover Foundation. #20 Ivory is about equal to #115 but it's a hair darker.)

Makeup Forever Mat Velvet Foundation is really a well performing foundation but between the shade range and the fragrance, you may want to consider spending $36 somewhere else.

There are dozens of matte finish foundations which will give you results that are equal to, or better than Mat Velvet and many will do that without added fragrance & with a better shade range!

*If you really like the Mat Velvet formula, consider Cruelty Free Mark Jacobs Genius Gel Super-Charged Foundation which is very similar and while it does have some scent added, it's a bit less than Mat Velvet.

Cruelty Free Nars Sheer Matte Foundation who's shade range is more consistent!

If you're looking for a cheaper drugstore option, you may want to check out Hard Candy's Just Fact It 4-in-1 Foundation which is also Cruelty Free and only $7. It may not be as elegant to apply as some higher end foundations, but it'll outlast & outperform many of them!

  1. Obrigada por seu artigo. Comprei a cor#35 e ficou muito escura, acho que comprarei a #20 para misturar. Nem sei como fazer mas...
