Dior Star Fluid Foundation SPF 30; Review & Swatches of Shades

Dior Skin Star Fluid Foundation
New for Fall 2014
Price: $50 per ounce

Dior released Dior Star Fluid Foundation a few months ago and as the newest member of the Dior foundation line up, it boasts powerful claims including that the Star Fluid Foundation was "inspired by the professional illuminating techniques to create Dior's first brightening foundation. The weightless fluid makeup is capable of recreating the spectacular and perfecting light of Dior's studios. Infused with hollow silica beads that capture and diffuse light in a correcting halo that doesn't leave skin looking shiny, the color-filter pigments neutralize skin tone imbalances and the anti "light-trap" skincare ingredients help reduce the appearance of dark spots and redness."
The claims Dior makes here are a bit cryptic; while they claim that Star Fluid Foundation "reduces the appearance of dark spots and redness" they don't specify whether or not Star Fluid Foundation is simply intended to conceal these woes or correct them over time. This may be smart of Dior in a way; because of the non-committal claims they can always say any unsatisfied customers just "misinterpreted the claims." If that's not Dior's intention, then they need to hire a new author for their descriptions.

As for Star Fluid itself, it's not exactly lightweight and it's not exactly anti-shine as advertised either. Star Fluid should have been marketed as a sort of more-hydrating-than-but-competitor for full coverage formulas like Kat Von D's Lock-It Tattoo Foundation or Becca Ultimate Coverage Complexion Creme, Lancome Photogenic Lumessence or Mac Studio Sculpt Foundation because that's the sort of formula Dior Star Fluid Foundation is.

Given recent marketing trends, including "fluid" in the Star Fluid almost gives the impression of a thin, lightweight, liquid to powder formula but Star Fluid is really on the opposite end of the foundation spectrum and best suited for normal to dry skin.

The Dior Star Fluid Foundation shade range is more than adequate with 14 shades that range from fair to very deep skin, and will match yellow, neutral or pink undertones quite well.

Performance wise, Star Fluid is a pretty solid foundation. It will provide full coverage (but can be blended down to medium) and does have adequate sun protection which is a nice bonus, but the thick tacky texture may be off-putting to some and it takes a bit of practice adapting an application technique that won't accentuate pores. Though some may not find that deterring, do keep in mind that unless you have very dry skin you will likely need to set this Dior foundation with powder on account of the dewy finish.

Becca Ultimate Coverage Complexion Creme Foundation is probably the closest Cruelty Free option to Dior Star Fluid, but Kat Von D Lock-It Tattoo Foundation is also an option to consider- especially if you have oily skin.
