Laura Mercier's Silk Creme Foundation has become a cult favorite in recent years. Silk Creme Foundation promises full coverage, all day wear and a flawless, radiant, glowing finish...

Laura Mercier's Silk Creme Foundation has alot of things going for it. For starters, it does look absolutely skin like if applied correctly and it will provide full coverage, but it looks much better if you only build to the fuller-side of medium coverage.
Luckily, Laura Mercier didn't do what she did with her Oil-Free Supreme and Moisture Supreme Foundations and try to make Silk Creme a Silicone Free Foundation because it has plenty of them and that's where it gets its elegant texture and feeling that can be slightly drying and is best for normal-oily skin.

It should be noted that there is a slight difference in which silicones are used in larger quantities between the shades. Soft Ivory, Peach Ivory and Medium Ivory are the three newest shades which Laura Mercier added a year or so ago. These three shades of Silk valentines day Creme Foundation all list Phenyl Trimethicone as the base ingredient, followed by Water with Cyclopentasiloxane completely omitted. The other 7 shades all list Cyclopentasiloxane, Water, then Phenyl Trimethicone.

This doesn't have too much of an impact on the formula since both Cyclopentasiloxane and Phenyl Trimethicone are non-soluble silicones, but there is a slight difference that should be noted. The three new shades, have more resistance to their finish once dry, (if that makes sense) and lose some of the appealing powdery finish.

Like most similar full coverage foundation formulas, Laura Mercier Silk Creme Foundation does have the potential to exacerbate pores if too much is applied. You want to be sure to blend thoroughly, evenly, quickly, and in thin layers. Those with drier skin need to moisturize prior to application.

Laura Mercier Silk Creme Foundation may not have the same coverage as competitors like Kat Von D Lock It Tattoo Foundation or Becca Ultimate Coverage Complexion Creme Foundation, but Silk Creme does have a little bit more of a powdery finish. Laura Mercier says that Silk Creme has a "glowing" finish, but it's really more of a matte finish with a hit of shimmery mica.

  1. I love your foundation reviews...how I've just found your blog I have no idea but I do wish I had some of your info before I bought certain foundations like this one for instance. This is way to dry for my skin then add the fact that no amt of shaking ever seemed to keep it coming out separated!

    1. Hey Rachael,
I'm glad you found me and thanks so much for your compliments!

I really have a hard time making Silk Creme work for me too. I have a hard time trying to figure out WHO would benefit best from it.

It's like a foundation with an identity crisis!

You're not using a drying silicone primer like Dr. Brandts with it are you? That will make it worse. If you use a moisturizer heavily and apply the foundation directly over it it may help.

If/when it starts to get dry or fade you want to make sure you use something to rehydrate it as much as you can instead of something that will dry it out more.

How long ago did you buy it? You may still be able to exchange it, even without the receipt.

Macy's. Sephora, & Nordstroms are all really good about exchanging- especially if you want something from the same brand (even if it's open/used).
