Laura has concocted a system called "Four Steps to a Flawless Face," of which concealers are the third step I believe? She makes two different types, this one, the secret concealer was originally available in 6 shades but it is now more like 8 or 9 and each shade is sold separately. They have a consistency very similar to petroleum jelly at first glance but don't be swayed by that, they really are a decent product!
The Secret Concealer is just like Bobbi Brown's Concealer & Corrector in that they are both moderate-full coverage, petroleum based concealers. These types of concealers are specifically designed for use under the eyes and aren't suitable for use on blemishes because of the Vaseliney-texture.
Formula's like Laura Mercier's Secret Concealer & Bobbi Brown's Corrector/Creamy Concealer typically hold their form fairly well compared to harder cream formulas and as a result they almost stay together above your skin making them less likely to creep in to fine lines or turn in to a watery mess. That being said, unless your skin is dry as the Sahara, you will need to set this sort of formula with a powder or use a second, very dry concealer over it.
(If you are a fan of Bobbi Brown's Concealers & Correctors, chances are, that you will also like the Secret Concealer by Laura Mercier.)
I know the thought of using a second product on top of this may sound silly but hear me out: using an emollient formula concealer with a long-wearing concealer (either over or under) gives the longevity of a long-wearing concealer without the usual dry crackly while keeping the full coverage attributes of the emollient formula. I only use a LITTLE bit of each product as that's really all you need. If you try to build the Secret Concealer up too much you will have problems, particularly if you are on
Laura Mercier has two corrector shades of the Secret Concealer (one rose and one orange), but the skin toned shades of concealer work so well it's possible you won't need a corrector as well. (Again, or you may want to layer formulas and instead of concealer+corrector+powder you should consider a Secret Concealer + a Long-Wearing Concealer.)
The Secret Concealer comes in 12 skin tone shades, but you will most certainly want to test them because they don't apply the way they first appear in the pot (which is BRIGHT). Laura Mercier has always been exceptional when it comes to maintaining consistency across her product lines and you'll find that the shades available in the Secret Concealer are nearly identical to her High Coverage Concealer which was released earlier this year.
Laura Mercier's Secret Concealer shades vary moderately from Bobbi Brown's Corrector and Creamy Concealer, but upon closer examination, they have more in common than you might think. Bobbi Brown suggest using a corrector which is bisque or peach and then a yellow concealer. The end result after mixing the two products atop one another, is a shade which is very similar to the shades available with the Secret Concealer, except with the Secret Concealer you only need one product to achieve that particular shade. (I hope that all made sense,)
(In the event that you prefer a more muted shade of concealer, Stila Stay All Day Concealer comes in 16 neutral shades that aren't as vibrant as Laura Merecier Secret Concealer, but may be more natural looking depending on the person and application method.)
All in all Laura Mercier Secret Concealer is a very good Cruelty Free alternative to petroleum based concealers like Bobbi Brown's, It is a very good product that does exactly what it is supposed to do, but like Bobbi Brown Concealers & Correctors, it gets alot of mixed reviews from people either using it improperly or looking for a one size fits all option and unfortunately; no product can meet everyone's needs!
