Too Faced Air-Buffed BB Creme Compact, SPF 20 Beauty Balm; Review & Swatches of Shades

Too Faced Air-Buffed BB Creme Compact
Price: $30 per ounce
(extremely cheap for a cream foundation)

CRUELTY FREE!!!

Too Faced Air Buffed BB Creme is actually a really unique product. There are plenty of BB Creams in liquid form, and there are a fair amount in cream compact for as well, but there aren't too many BB Creams, CC Creams, Tinted Moisturizers or Foundations that have a formula quite like Too Faced's Air Buffed BB Cream...
Laura Mercier has her Tinted Moisturizer Compact and both Mac & Physicians Formula have contributions with the Mac Prep & Prime BB Cream Compact & the Physicians Formula Super BB Cream compact. All of those formulas are true emollient compacts (though the formulas do vary a bit), and that is what set's Too Faced Air Buffed BB Creme apart.

Unlike many cream/creme foundations (or in this case BB Creams/Tinted Moisturizers), which are truly moisturizing and typically have a satin or dewy finish, Too Faced promises that their Air Buffed BB Creme will mattify and control oil; (in addition to "Priming, treating, Perfecting, and Protecting" of course). Given these claims, it would be sensible to assume that Too Faced Air Buffed BB Creme is a Cream to Powder formula, but that's not entirely true either.

Too Faced Air Buffed BB Creme comes in a compact with a screw lid and a detachable buffing brush for application. (The brush is o.k. for minor touch ups but that's it because of it's incredibly small size so don't rely on that.) The product itself is a moderately hard cream with a light-weight texture that may feel a bit "draggy" if you tap it with your finger but it blends easily when applied to skin.

What's incredibly interesting is that Too Faced Air Buffed BB Creme is dimethicone based. While this is a silicone present in many products, you don't see too many foundations that are dimethicone based because it doesn't set like cyclopentasiloxane when exposed to air which can be a good thing or a bad thing depending on your skin type.

If you have tried a dimethicone based concealer like Almay Smart Shade CC Brightening & Concealing Duo, or Hard Candy Glamoflauge LITE Blendable Concealer Duo, then you have a pretty good idea of what to expect with Too Faced Air Buffed BB Creme because the formula is similar to theirs.

You have to know going into it, that while Too Faced Air Buffed BB Creme will control oil to a point, and it will do a great job of staying matte, it's not going to set. It doesn't really get that silky or powdery feeling that most cream to powder products do and it retains its texture quite a bit so if that sort of thing bothers you you may want to set it with powder or a powder alternative like Mally Poreless Face Defender who's formula compliments the Air Buffed BB Creme very well.

The issue of texture and the way your skin feels after application can also be dramatically improved by only using a light-medium coverage application, or using the Air Buffed BB Creme as a primer and applying a foundation with a preferable finish lightly over it.

The SPF of 20 is wonderful, and just like Too Faced's Multi-Benefit BB Cream SPF 20, the sun protection is gentle and mineral based so it's effective and perfect for use on sensitive skin.

If you're looking for a moisturizing formula, you may want to consider Too Faced's liquid BB Cream which is a stellar BB cream. Too Faced's liquid BB cream also has some beneficial skin-healthy ingredients where as the Air Buffed BB Cream is more like a foundation (and It's not realistic to put many light & air sensitive ingredients in this kind of packaging.) You could always use both Too Faced BB Creams together too!

If you have normal to oily skin and are on the hunt for a good cream-powder foundation or a foundation with SPF, then Too Faced Air Buffed BB Creme may work well for you and is certainly worth trying if you have fair-medium skin, especially considering how much product you get for your money!

Too Faced Air-Buffed BB Creme Compact comes with a quantity of 1 ounce which is nearly unheard of for any non-liquid foundations and if it was sold in the average amount, the price works out to about $10 for a standard cream formula. Most cream or cream-powder foundations come in quantities of 6-12 grams so you get about 1/3 of the weight you get with a liquid foundation which usually comes in 1 ounce. Cream foundations aren't more expensive to use though because the formulas are usually 3x more concentrated than liquid foundations which have a higher moisture/water content.
