If you've been shopping for makeup, chances are you have at least heard of, if not tried Bobbi Brown's Creamy Concealer and/or Corrector. Alleging to be celebrity makeup artist Bobbi Brown's "secret to the universe," it boasts some pretty big claims, especially considering the small package it comes in. So are Bobbi's secret weapons enough to prevent a makeup meltdown?
Most people apply concealer either under or over foundation. Many people will choose a concealer one shade lighter than their skin tone to lighten up the eye area, then apply foundation over it to create a seamless look, but not Bobbi Brown.

Bobbi Brown says that you choose a concealer one shade lighter than your foundation. Ok, that's fine, but then she would have you apply a corrector under the concealer. That;s ok too. Here's where it get's weird, she says that you never layer concealer & foundation, EVER.....

I'm no celebrity makeup artist, but I don't agree with that, like, at all. I believe that even if you put concealer on over foundation, you still need to blend out the concealer by adding a touch of foundation, at least around the edges, and most makeup gurus would agree with me.

Bobbi Brown's secret isn't really a secret at all. It's actually pretty simple once its de-mystified too.
You apply a corrector which is either pink or peach based to neutralize dark circles since they're either blue or purple based. (personally I can't tell the difference between a purple & a blue dark circle, but I think its dependent on undertones of your skin.) You must be sure to apply such an oh-so-thin layer of corrector, just enough to absorb into the skin. If you apply too much and corrector is sitting on the skin, then it will mix with the concealer & you will lose the integrity of the shade.

Now, you apply the concealer. All of Bobbi Brown's Creamy Concealer Shades are yellow based. I think this is intentional because their intended to be used with the corrector, so if you use a bisque (pink) corrector, it will mix with the yellow concealer and make a neutralized, natural looking combination. (In theory anyways.) If you use a peach corrector, it will mix with the yellow and make a combination perfect for those with a yellow undertone. Again, in theory anyways...

In actuality, the whole corrector & concealer business can be quite effective, but rarely with formulas so incredibly similar, (there is virtually no difference between the Creamy Concealer & Corrector's formulas.) You're best bet if you wish to use a corrector with a concealer is to chose a combination with opposite formulas, like a fast drying concealer atop of an emollient corrector. When you have two products that are the same formula, you are essentially just applying two shades of the same product and when you do that, you will have to get application just right to not over do it, after all, a recipe which calls for double an ingredient is always a little suspect!

While the shade range is quite extensive, that's about where the uniqueness of Bobbi Brown's Creamy Concealer & Corrector ends. Yes, it will conceal most major woes quite well; dark circles will vanish and you will look like you're well rested even when you aren't, but this isn't a concealer to use on blemishes. Its doubtful that those who suffer from acne would ever spread Vaseline on their problem areas, but that's precisely what putting Bobbi Brown's Concealer & Corrector amounts to on account of its petroleum base!

Petroleum based concealers are quite common in the beauty world. Laura Mercier Secret Concealer is another example, and Stila Stay All Day Concealer is a wonderful Cruelty Free option which comes in a whopping 16, neutral shades which can be worn without a corrector underneath and still look natural.

In short, Bobbi Brown Creamy Concealer & Corrector will certainly perform for you and they will likely remain a cult favorite for some time, but there are certainly better options available!
